Do you know who's your neighbors? Neighbors are not just the ones who lives next house or nears us but they can also be someone around us. For example, your roommate at the dorm is your neighbour. The person sitting behind or next to you in a bus or at a bus stop is your neighbour. The person sharing your office at work is your neighbour. The person enjoying fresh air next to you in a public garden is also a neighbour. Besides, Prophet Muhammad taught us that a neighbour is not just the one living next door, but also those living in up to 40 houses in all directions – effectively the whole neighbourhood.
Islam also encourage its believers to treat their neighbors nicely. As in hadith narrated by Aisyah, The Prophet (ﷺ) said "Gabriel continued to recommend me about treating the neighbors Kindly and politely so much so that I thought he would order me to make them as my heirs.
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 6014, Book 78, Hadith 45)
Islam is a social life based on kindness, sympathy, mutual support and solidarity. It is founded on cooperation in goodness and piety, helping others avoid sin and aggression, and assisting every Muslim to protect the rights of those he deals with.
In this regard, Islam considers the rights of a neighbour to be extremely important. A Muslim must be good to his neighbours, no matter their religion. Maintaining these rights helps the individual and society to be happy. In addition, we must also care for our neighbors and treat them well like we treat someone of our own as in hadith reported by Abu Dharr:
Abu Dharr reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) commanded me thus:
Whenever you prepare a broth, add water to it, and have in your mind the members of the household of your neighbours and then give them out of this with courtesy.
(Sahih Muslim 2625c, Book 45, Hadith 286)
Besides, we should not harms our neighbors because it can make Allah scorn and curse us and it may lead us to hellfire as reported by Abu Hurayra: A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! There is a woman who prays, gives charity and fasts a great deal, but she harms her neighbours with her speech (by insulting them)" He said: "She will go to hell". The man said: "O messenger of Allah! There is (another) woman who is well-known for how little she fasts and prays, but she gives charity from the dried yoghurt she makes and she does not harm her neighbours". He said: "She will go to paradise"
(Ahmad, vol. 4, p. 166, Ibn Hibban, hadith no. 2054).
Other than mentioned, there are many more hadith and quranic verse related to adab towards neighbors and these shows us that it is absolutely important to have adab towards our neighbors as well as in society that we live in.
